An article in The Japan Times urges Obama to push for collaboration with Japan on high speed rail when the president visits Tokyo Friday. The Obama Administration is touting this plan as the future of American travel and federal grants will be rewarded in summer 2009.
In April the American Recovery and Investment Act set aside $8 billion for rail systems, specifically for high speed rail. In addition, the plan will request $1 billion per year over the next five years.
