Freestyle Fellowship -- Return of the Kings

By Kevin Weston, Jul 30, 2010 3:30 PM

One of my favorite Hip Hop groups from the 90's is back on tour and I can't wait until these kings of LA rap come to Oakland. Freestyle Fellowship set trends and styles in Hip Hop that have influenced a generation of MC's. Welcome back fellas.

Y'all Ain't Ready -- An Awful Takeaway from the Sherrod Fiasco

By Kevin Weston, Jul 25, 2010 11:15 PM

Before the Sherrod fiasco turned racial politics in America over in its grave, again, I was thinking: The Tea Party may have just messed with the wrong group of Black folks – reenergizing the Democratic Party’s most reliable voters in the lead-up to a crucial mid-term election. The NAACP – under the relatively new leadership of Benjamin Jealous – made headlines all week during its annual convention in Kansas City.

Thank the Police -- Post Oakland Outrage Baby Thrown Into Traffic, 3 Shot Dead

By Kevin Weston, Jul 11, 2010 4:00 PM

OAKLAND Calif. -- I heard the mantra "F--k the Police" so many times in the lead up to the unrest in Oakland that my ears rang sweetly for the rest of the night. It's one of my favorite songs of all time and the realities Ice Cube, Easy E, MC Ren and Dr Dre articulated for my generation are still true.

The OPD and other law enforcement agencies were on their best behavior that night, the scenes of violence would have been much worse had they not showed some restraint. It helped that no more than 1000 people showed up.

Grant Verdict: GUILTY, What now Oakland?

By Kevin Weston, Jul 8, 2010 6:56 PM

DOWNTOWN OAKLAND -- Around 5:30pm, helicopters overhead, old white man with a megaphone: "We need a revolution...," OPD standing on Broadway and 13th absorbing the abuse stonefaced, old black man in the Radier's hat and tight jeans: "That white boy knows what he did...he will have to answer..."

Youngsters with dreads and long multi-colored polo shirts are taking in the spectacle mostly subduded but opinionated -- letting the officers know how they felt about the bogus (?) verdict the mostly white jury in the People v.s. MEHSERLE came back with.

The Digital Scarlet Letter -- Beyond the Grant Verdict

By Kevin Weston, Jul 8, 2010 3:29 PM

It’s easier for an African American to get elected president in these United States than it is for white cop to get punished to the fullest extent for shooting a Black man in the back.

You’ll know a change did come if Johannes Mehserle -- the ex-transit officer who shot a hog tied, prone, begging for his life Oscar Grant -- gets significant time for doing what is more Americana than Cowboys – cop shoots negro male, gets away with it. As I write reports are coming in that the jury has reached a verdict.

It would be the kind of change that Sam Cooke dreamed about while pushing his voice to the edge of desire, ecstatic longing and tortured pain: “I was born by the river, in a little tent…

When Things Fall Apart

By Kevin Weston, Nov 2, 2009 9:29 AM

Broken Bridges, Oil Slicks and Gang Rapes.

That snapping sound heard across the Bay Area last weekend were the binds the that help tie this society together fraying at the ends and tearing apart – not just the Bay Bridge.

In one week the whole infrastructure of modern society has come under question right in my backyard.

Ghosts of Simi Valley -- Grant case won't be tried in Oakland

By Kevin Weston, Oct 16, 2009 1:36 PM

You could kinda see it coming during the months of posturing in the media and studies and whatever…

Today a judge ordered that the murder trial of former BART police Officer Johannes Mehserle, accused of killing Oscar Grant, to be moved out of Oakland.

How am I supposed to take this other than the justice system acting to save the life and liberty of one of their own?

Million Dollar Slave Revolt -- Limbaugh v.s. Black NFL

By Kevin Weston, Oct 13, 2009 11:52 AM

When the news hit that Rush Limbaugh would join a group to purchase the NFL’s St. Louis Rams a lightweight, modern day, slave rebellion was set in motion.

It’s sad and encouraging to watch.

Sad. It’s a regression from a time when you could count on a African American athlete to stand up for something.
