An Indian-American teenager who made news by trying to become the nation's youngest city council member has decided to try instead for a seat on a local college board. Ishan Shah, 18, had launched his campaign for Fremont City Council as a 16-year-old. But now he has decided he wants to try to win a seat vacated on the Ohlone College Board of Trustees reports Sunita Sohrabji for India West. Shah is also a student at Ohlone College.

The Ohlone seat opened up when John Weed retired after 33 years on the board. Shah said former state Assemblyman John Dutra approached him about running for that seat. Ohlone College in Fremont is a community college and Shah said he wants to focus on an education and he wants to market the college to both young high school graduates and older students who want job retraining.

Shah says he has had to deal with some supporters who are questioning his campaign switch. But Dutra has sent out a letter of support. “As a student there, he will be directly affected by the policies of the board and will provide an unrivaled level of accountability and a unique personal investment to seeing Ohlone succeed,” Dutra said in his statement of support.
